1. Reads emergently-- simple familiar picture books and texts containing familiar letter/sounds. *Uses knowledge pertaining to book/ print conventions. *Recognize, identify, and produce rhyming words and alliteration.
2. Attains a reading vocabulary consisting of common words such as environmental print and high-frequency words.
3. Uses knowledge of letter sounds and picture clues to figure out simple, regularly spelled, single-syllable words. (e.g., cat, dog, bed) *Uses knowledge of the alphabetic principle. *Segment phonemes and blend sounds to create spoken words. *Decodes and encodes words.
4. Rereads familiar books using monitoring strategies modeled by the teacher (picture clues, picture walks, self-questioning, and clarifying for meaning).
5. Demonstrates comprehension by retelling a known story (fiction and nonfiction).
6. Demonstrates comprehension by identifying characters and setting of a story.
7. Supports predictions, answers, and conclusions by locating key concepts from book pictures and words (fiction and nonfiction).
8. Demonstrates comprehension through participation in whole and small group reading discussions regarding various genres (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry).
9. Reads and rereads several familiar books.

1. Draws and/or writes (stories, poems) about single event including people, places, and things.
2. Draws or writes informational sentences (letters, descriptions, definitions, collections of facts, simple instructions).
3. Differentiates facts from opinions (foundation for persuasive writing).
4. Draws and writes with focus to depict specific experiences, stories, people, objects, or events.
5. Organize words into a complete thought and include the subject and verb.
6. Writes using descriptive words and verbs.
7. Revises drawings and writing to sequence events and add details.
8. Uses sound spelling well enough for the teacher to read.
9. Writes upper and lowercase letters independently attending to the form and proper spacing of the letters.
10. Begins to use punctuation during writing.
