COURSE OBJECTIVES |
CONTENT OUTLINE |
1. Students will develop an understanding of numbers, number systems and number relationships.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.1. Numbers, Number Systems and Number Relationships |
1. Count using whole numbers by ones, fives, tens, (0-100), and by twos (0-10) Identify and write numerals representing sets through 100 Write numerals representing number words (0-20) Use of concrete objects to order and group numbers Demonstrate an understanding of one to one correspondence through concrete objects Apply place value concepts (tens and ones) in counting, ordering, grouping numbers Introduce number patterns, odd and even (0-20) Compare sets equivalent to, greater than, or less than (<,>,=) (0-99) Identify ordinal positions and written names (first-tenth) Count and compare a collection of coins using quarters, pennies, dimes and nickels to and including 1 dollar Recognize the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction using number families Use pictures and concrete objects to construct and compare fractional parts of regions (1/2, 1/3, ¼) Estimate, approximate or use exact numbers as appropriate
2. Students will apply computation and estimation skills in mathematical operations.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.2. Computation and Estimation |
2. Estimate a set and recognize when the estimation is or is not a reasonable answer. Use concrete objects to show the operations of addition and subtraction Recall addition and subtraction facts 0-10 Apply single and double-digit addition and subtraction without regrouping in vertical and horizontal form Add three single digit numbers with sums to 18 Describe the operation of addition and subtraction using oral and written language Solve picture and word problems by writing the number sentence that relates to the addition or subtraction situation
3. The students will demonstrate an understanding of true and estimated measurements.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.3. Measurement and Estimation |
3. Compare, estimate and verify, length, capacity, weight, temperature and time Choose appropriate measuring tools (scale, thermometer, measuring cup, rulers) Measure lengths using centimeters, inches and non-standard units Measure heavier, lighter weights (1-kilogram, 1 pound) Say and write time to the hour and half-hour (analog and digital) Compare elapsed times Order the days of the week and months of the year and read a calendar Read a calendar
4. The students will communicate their use of mathematical reasoning and problem solving.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.4 Mathematical Reasoning and Connections 2.5 Mathematical Problem Solving and Communication |
4. Make, check and verify predictions about the quantity, size and shape of objects and groups of objects Explain the use of measurement to solve problems in everyday situations Determine when sufficient information is present to solve a problem and explain how to solve a problem using oral and written language Select and use appropriate methods, materials and strategies to solve problems
5. The students will predict and interpret data they have gathered and organized.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.6. Statistics and Data Analysis 2.7 Probability and Predictions |
5. Gather, organize and display data using pictures, tallies and bar graphs and pictographs Solve problems by reading and using data shown on graphs and charts Form and justify an opinion using data from graphs State and explain the likelihood of a chance event using the terms: certain impossible, probable Collect and analyze data using the concept of largest to smallest and most often to least often Identify a spinner that is fair or unfair
6. The students will use algebra and functions.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.8. Algebra and Functions |
6. Recognize, describe, extend, and construct patterns based on a variety of attributes Substitute a missing addend in number sentences Create a story to match a given combination of symbols and numbers Explain the meaning of solutions and symbols in oral or written form Determine what operation will solve a problem accurately (addition/subtraction) Locate points on a simple grid
7. The students will demonstrate knowledge of basic geometric and Trigonometry concepts.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.9 Geometry 2.10 Trigonometry |
7. Identify and name plane figures (square, triangle, circle, rectangle, oval) Identify and name solid shapes (cylinder, cone, sphere, cube, pyramid, and rectangular prism) Find and describe geometric figures in real life Relate solid shapes to plane shapes Identify and draw lines of symmetry in geometric figures and in real life objects
8. The students will demonstrate basic concepts of calculus.
Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics 2.11. Concepts of Calculus |
8. Continue a pattern of numbers or objects that could be extended infinitely. Categorize rates of change as faster and slower.
