Course Description:  This course will give a general outline of one of the fastest growing sections of agriculture.  All major areas of the horticulture field will be discussed.  General studies in plant science, floriculture, greenhouse production, and landscape will be covered.  Education and training in pesticide safety will be covered as well.

Obtain an overview of the Horticulture Industry

·          Discuss the various sectors of he Horticulture Industry

Explore Horticulture related career opportunities

·          Describe careers in the Horticulture industry

·          Survey the local job market for career opportunities that relate to the interest of the student.

·          Identify skills needed for various horticulture related jobs

·          Complete an in depth study on one or more jobs in the Horticulture industry.

Differentiate between scientific and common names of plants.

·          Explain why scientific names are used

·          List 10 plants by their common and scientific names

·          Discuss why binomial naming is used.

·          Give examples of family names.

·          Identify 3 popular taxonomies

Identify plant parts, functions and requirements for good growth

·          Recognize contributions of plants to the life cycle on earth

·          List and describe the purpose of plant parts

·          Explain the difference between monocot and dicot plants

·          Describe the process of pollination

·          List factors that affect plant growth

·          Identify soil characteristics and properties

·          Understand and Identify the plant heat zones in the Unites States

Plant Identification

·          Classify plants according to their life cycle and use

Flowers, Trees, Shrubs, Vegetables, Herbs

Floriculture Industry

·          Describe the scope and value of the floriculture industry

·          Identify occupational tools and practices.

·          Identify major design styles

·          Know the basic requirements of cut flowers

·          List the principals of design

·          Explain the concept of color in floral design

·          Complete a floral arrangement

·          Construction of a bow

·          Construction of a corsage or boutonniere

Greenhouse Production

·          Describe the scope and importance of the greenhouse industry.

·          Identify skills needed to work in the greenhouse industry.

·          Recognize safety practices needed in the greenhouse setting.

·          Identify basic principles for starting a greenhouse operation.

·          Describe basic management of a greenhouse enterprise

·          Recognize the importance of marketing and promotion in greenhouse production.

Landscape Management

·          Identify the scope and importance of the landscape industry.

Interior Landscape Management
